Has anyone switched from another antipsychotic like Risperdal to Geodon and lost weight? I have been switched for this reason in addition to the hyperprolactinemia and am curious if anyone else has had good results in terms of weight reduction.

I have read several posts on Google News Groups where people have stated that they have been able to lose a lot of weight after switching to Geodon. I have been taking Geodon for several months and I have not gained any weight (I am not trying to lose any.)

I've been on Geodon for a year now and did lose some of the weight I had gained on Zyprexa. But I haven't continued to lose weight beyond that.

I am glad to hear that people can lose weight while taking Geodon, but I'm having an awful time staying asleep since taking it! I've been up since 4:30 a.m. today and am wired/exhausted! Would love some insight as to whether this side effect diminishes with time!!

The previous latest trend was to use anticonvulsants as "antidepressants." Now, prescribing antipsychotics as "antidepressants" is in vogue. So, do AP's really work for depression? All I've read about Geodon so far is that people can't sleep at night but they are groggy all day. I haven't heard anything positive about its effects on depression. Does anyone here have anything to report?
Also, what about extra-pyramidal symptoms, tardive dyskinesia, etc?

I'm experiencing exactly what you described- I just can't stay asleep at night which leaves me tired and groggy all day. It really affects my life- but I need to be on this one since it doesn't cause weight gain. It's making me crazy!

I found that Geodon has had a definite antidepressant component. I have been on it for a year now during which time I have re-discovered former aspects of my life that gave me pleasure, like I can "hear" music again and "feel" love again. I also started on Mirapex 9 months ago, so some of the benefits are a result of that, too, but I did feel the effects of the Geodon within a month. I also have done better at 40 mg. than at 100 mg.and have no noticable side effects, like I had at a higher dose (restlessness, drowsiness, mostly and weird dreams).I recall that Dr. Ivan Goldberg (of Dr. Ivan's Depression Central) mentioned to me in an e-mail that his bipolar patients did better ona lower dose, too.
Someone once posted an explanation of this phenonomen. Maybe it has something to do with the principle of partial agonism/antagonism of serotonin at different doses.

I lost 50 pounds in 6 months on Geodon, and in fact got to the point where I literally could not eat. It was great in the beginning, but by the end I was so malnourished my hair was coming out in handsfuls...when I look back it's rather frightening at how little I could force down. And at that point I was down to one pill (20 mg?) a day. Initially on it I felt better...almost manic? But got worse as I continued it. Looking back, don't really think it helped the depression. So be cautious that it may cause severe anorexia.
