Hi,
I haven't had any problems in the past with athletic performance with any of the AD's, but I'm not a competitive athlete. I don't think that I've ever heard of an AD affecting athletic performance whatsoever. I do know personally that psychostimulants slightly increase aerobic threshold. For me they also give me more willpower and stamina. I love to take them before a run or bike ride.

I'm not an endurance athlete, rather a strength athlete, but I can share some experience that may be relevant to an endurance athlete... Selegiline, while it is an activating AD, tends to make me short of breath...I've heard other people say this as well so I'm pretty sure its not a fluke. I don't think that most AD's are going to hurt you much at all...since respiration and keeping one's heart rate are important to an endurance athlete, I think it might be wise to avoid the MAOi's (which tend to cause overreaction to a given stimulus...unless you are very anergic, in which case they would be a good idea) for a while and try the SSRI's, and some of the atypical antidepressants first... All in all, you will have to do experimentation to find what will work best for you...what are is your diagnosis?

Atypical. You're right about the MAOIs. When I was on Parnate, I had a hard time working out at the gym 'cause all the time up and down between machines would make dizzy. I also was very tired late in the day because I had insomnia all night. I did notice an improvement in energy with low doses of Prozac but a decrease in endurance at higher doses. Serzone, Zyprexa, in my opinion and experience, were a disaster for any athletic endevour. Good luck with Wellbutrin, EffexorXR but both had poop out effect for depression. Just started a combo of Adderral and Celexa. So far energy seems good. Want to get back to racing, esp. marathoning, possibly ultras.

Thanks for the input.

SSRIs didn't hinder sports perfomance at all.
Wellbutrin always gave me a slight chest tightness and shortness of breath. One of the reasons I discontinued it. Zyprexa is a great mood brightner at 2.5mg, but it does fatigue somewhat. What it gives, it takes out of your sports strength/energy. You feel that about it right away. I am tapering off it also for that reason, and just going with Effexor. It doesn't seem to effect my energy. If anything I have more energy with Effexor. Remeron might work out after the initial somnolence fades. Interesting question.
