First day on klonopin yesterday. .5 mg twice a day, exhausted, too exhausted to even research why they prescribed this to me @ the hospital. Last night I had 3 beers (not a lot for me), got out of the car and fell asleep in the front yard i was so tired.
I'm also on 40 mg prozac...any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. (i know i shouldn't be drinking on meds, that was a mistake, but is this exhaustion normal? how can i counteract it?)

James here....
klonopin + beer = tired. Answer is: don't drink while on klonopin. You are really playing it fast and loose drinking while first starting klonopin. You run the risk of making klonopin not 2X stronger but exponantially stronger, 4X,16X, ect.
What you are doing is risky.James

sar,
You should also keep in mind that many drugs, not just psychiatric drugs, can change your tolerance for alcohol. Any time you are taking any new medication you cannot assume you know how many drinks you can have and still function.

For a lot of people, it takes time for your body to get used to klonopin. For myself, I'm so very sensitive to it that I can only handle a tiny dose- just a quarter of a .5mg tab once a day. This amount has useful mood stabilization and anti-anxiety effects- if I take any more, I get depressed and wiped out for 2 days.
Everybody is different! BUT, we all agree that drinking while on most of these meds, and klonopin specifically is (no slur intended) downright stupid. Hopefully you learned your lesson- but if drinking is an addictive problem for you, get help. Many of us (me, for one) tried to self-medicate with alcohol, only to have to face the reality that acohol itself is a depressant.
Good wishes,
Cece

I've got to side with the others, here. Don't drink. But I wouldn't say NEVER.
You do need to keep in mind that a lot of people here take klonopin to sleep. What does that tell you??
If you're on meds and you refuse to quit drinking completely:
Take a few weeks off from drinking, with the new med. Get meds settled in, get used to their regular side effects BEFORE you try adding alcohol. So anyway, start by taking a few weeks to adjust to meds. You probably shouldn't be driving, if there's any other options! THEN, try one beer at home. NOT "out", where if it has a bad effect you're stuck trying to get home or getting into trouble. Pay attention to your body's reaction, how do you feel, how do you feel the next day, etc. Then try maybe 2 drinks. Again, pay attention...Play it slow, get used to it, before you try going out and imbibing like you may have before.
Luck...
