Can anyone tell me of their experiences with this combo? Thanks

Maung,

I was on gabapentin 300mg 3x daily with 25mg Topamax twice daily. It worked rather well. The topamax got stopped because of trouble with thinking clearly at work. Some folks don't have this trouble and it seems that you have to start the Topamax very low (with the gabapentin pretty much at the dose you intend to stay at) and then increase the TOP VERY SLOWLY and let your body/mind get used to it.

Thanks for your response. I take 200 mg Topomax in am.....it does not cause any cognitive difficulties...but I ramped up slowly...I am now taking 100 mg gabapentin at night..I'm hoping it will have a synergistc effect with the Top so that my anxious and depressive tendencies will be alleviated.

I take 100 mg topamax twice a day and added 100 mg gabapentin in the p.m. for exactly the reasons you describe. Just that little bit of gabapentin made a world of difference - no negative side effects. Hope it works as well for you.

Hi! I take a lot more Neurontin than you do - 2400 mg per day, 600 mg doses. Didn't do a thing alone - works really well with the Topamax. Only real problem I have with the Topamax is sedation.

Good luck!

Thanks to all who have responded. KIngfish, you say Neurotin works really well with the Topomax; how much of the topomax are you taking now? I am presently ramping up my topomax...I'm now up to 225 mg (and experience no sedation)and will go as high as I can until I notice side effects...and then my pdoc will probably increase the neurontin, if necessary, which is presently only 100 mg at night. I'm curious about the dose of Topomax you're on because you say you have a problem with sedation from it...so I wonder if your dose is higher or lower than mine. Sue

Sue: I hope you don't mind if I respond to your question, too. First, I should say that I also take a low dose of Effexor (75mg) so take that into consideration. For what it's worth- when I took 300 mg. a day of Topomax I did have moderate sedation problems and severe cognitive problems. It seemed to contribute to my depression and my anxiety level was high. I dropped back to 200 mg. a day and the sedation and cognitive problems left, anxiety decreased. I asked for my Neurontin back-just a little-and adding that 100 mg. a day as I told you earlier did the trick with the remaining problems. Sometimes if I'm sliding back down in the hole I increase it to 200 a day and it seems to help get me through. I'm telling you all this to give you another option IF you do have problems with the Topomax. You could consider asking your doc if you could increase the Neurontin (more than I have)and back down on the Topomax. I hope you sail on the higher doses of the T, though. It's a good med; it's been a help to me. somebetter

Somebetter, thankyou....I'm keeping my fingers crossed that T will be beneficial for me at higher doses as well...I will be returning to school in the fall and am hopeful that with Topomax, I'll be able to go the distance. Thanks again for your suggestions.
