Effexor XR - Morning or Night

Posted by Mike71 on March 31, 2001, at 22:40:38

Hi,

I have been taking 150mg of Effexor XR in the morning for about 2 months now. My mood is better. :-)

The problem is, about 1 hour after taking the medication, I feel the need to take a nap. Then in the afternoon, I feel the need to take another nap! Finally in the evening I am awake and alert.

When it comes time for bed, I have been taking 0.5mg of Clonazepam. This helps.

What I want to do is eliminate the need for naps during the day. Does anyone take Effexor XR at night and sleep OK?

Hi Mike!
I have generally always had problems sleeping, and my pdoc knows this.... so when I started effexor xr she told me to take the whole dose at dinner. I take it around 8... and for the first time.... I'm able to sleep through a whole night! I think if I took it in the morning... I'd need those naps too. Give it a shot. Michele

Hi Mike -

I wanted to find out if you were able to sleep since taking the meds at night. I just started taking Effexor XR last week and have not been able to sleep the night through. I'm taking 37.5 mg and needed to take a sleep aid last night but still woke up a couple of times. Let me know if it's working.

Thanks!

I am now taking 150mg around 6pm. I also take 0.5mg of clonazapam which is a very mild tranquilizer (I take that at 9pm). So far, I have not been able to fall asleep before 1am. The verdict is still out though, as its only been 3 days. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks Mike - I've actually took an otc sleep aid last night (took it at 10:00) fell asleep around 12:00 and actually slept through the night. I'm thinking I'll start to ween myself off of it until this symptom goes away. Thanks for your feedback.

Well mike, I've still been taking my dose at 8, and the last 2 nights I didn't fall asleep until after 3!!!!! Which isn't bad for me at the moment, I'm out of work right now due to a car accident.... but will be going back to work in a couple of weeks, so I need to get this figured out. I think I'm gonna try 5 tonight. I hope I didnt give you some bad advice. One question... taking it at night.. even tho you didn't fall asleep till later...... where you still tired during the following day? What a pain in the *&*& this is. Michele

I have the same problem, Mike. I am taking 37.5 mg, and I can barely stay awake during the day. Actually, I've found that it's not necessarily "during the day", it's when I'm trying to sit at my desk at work and focus on what I'm doing. When I need to focus on something that's not internal, I need to sleep. When I want to relax and sleep, that's when I wake up.

What's worse, if there is ANY form of anxiety around, it gets multiplied exponentially and then I REALLY can't sleep.

Even wierder, if I've been on it consistently (I've been inconsistent because I can'ttake the side effects), no matter what time, if I lay down right after I get home from work, I crash out UNTIL IT'S TIME TO GO TO BED... no matter what time I get home, I'll easily crash out until it's time to REALLY SLEEP. Then I cannot.

But, it helps my mood and helps me deal with things. What am I going to do? I'd rather be tired than depressed, so, I guess I keep taking it.

The main point is that, no matter what time of day, I cannot sleep well at night. Real positive for you, eh! But, I feel it's worth it.
