Paxil, Sex Drive, and alternatives

Posted by KRT on April 2, 2001, at 19:52:42

Hello,

Since I met my recent girlfriend, there was always a sort of strange libido problem going on. I found out that she has been on Paxil for a year now. I know about Paxil and its sexual-sensation-nullifying effects because my ex-girlfriend went on it then quit because of side effects.

Anyway, She had not really been with anyone for the past year so the sex-killer side effect didn't matter that much. Now, it does. So, unbeknownst to me, she quit taking the Paxil two weeks ago.

I noticed a marked increase in orgasm capability in the past week BUT... my GOD... her depression is ominous in its desnse, dark tangibleness. She NEEDS to be on something. I didn't ask her to quit taking Paxil and I told her that I could live with the libido problems as long as SHE was happy.

Well, She's NOT happy anymore. Anything negative sends her into a tailspin. It's straining our relationship and, ironically, though she CAN get into sex we don't HAVE sex as much because she's always so down and upset.

She's talking about seeing a doctor again, but she keeps putting it off.

Is there any advice you folks can offer? I feel like if I tell her there is something out there that can help, it'll help her make up her mind to go back to the doctor. What else is out there? I'm taking Effexor XR, and have tried Celexa, with no sex-killer effects... I know she'd go back on something in a heartbeat so long as there's the possibility that she won't have sexual side effects. Does anything else work as well on the depression without killing the orgasms?

Thanks in advance for any info... without the drug, she's miserable, and I hate to see her this way (not to mention what it's doing to our relationship).

hi KRT,

lucky you, she cares so much about you:) this is wonderful!

I am very sensitive to paxil + it's the only SSRI that works wonders for me. I actually went down to 5 mg now, and it still works, and yes, the ability to have good orgasms is back.

I would advice her not to quit the medicine altogether, but try to lower the dose gradually, halving it, and giving it a week or so to see what happpens till you both are satisfied.

good luck to you guys:)

mila

Yes, I am very fortunate. Thanks for your account. I don't want her to quit the medication altogether. She was doing MUCH better on it. I'll tell her some things that I found out...

It's just tought to broach the topic sometimes, you know?

thanks again...
