I have been taking effexor xr for the last 6mths the only bad side effect for me is a weight gain of 24lbs!
The "GREAT" side effect has been a major "INCREASE" in my sex drive!!! I can orgasm just thinking about it and my husband is having a hard time keeping up with me in fact he is the one saying not tonight!
Has anyone else found this side effect?
I am in my late forties and have been with my husband since I was 14yrs & he 16yrs so he has seen a lot of sexual changes throughout the years but this one all he can say is "why didn't you get depression in your twenties if this is the side effect!!

I haven't heard someone talk about an increase in sex drive in an antidepressant since someone mentioned it with selegiline. So I tried it myself and it turned out to be true--increasing sex drive at weird times, though. But I am glad that you have received a good side-effect from Effexor in this group which lately has made effexor out to be from the devil.

why is increased sex drive a good thing? does the medication help your depression? you didnt say
I mean the effexor was prescribed for depression, not to make you want to orgasm and have sex all the time. I dont see how this is a good thing?
Well I guess if sex makes you happy then its good. Whatever works for you.

Yes the effexor xr has helped my depression, at my high I was taking 225mgs, I felt numb(NO FEELINGS) no motivation and I slept 18hrs a day I had no desire for sex (WHICH I HAD NOT WANTED FOR ALMOST A YEAR)..this was not the way I wanted to live! but on the good side I was not feeling suicidal anymore. To cut a long story short! I went down to 75mgs and I found I started to feel!the depression, anxiety, social phobia all started to lift and YES I FOUND I HAD AN RENEWED INTEREST IN SEX...WHICH I ADAMS DON'T THINK IS A BAD THING!!!

Hi Lilian. This is great. How long have you been taking 75mg?
I wonder how many other people experience this therapeutic window - too much is no good. What kind of depression were you suffering from? How would you describe it? What other medication are you taking?
Thanks for any feedback.

...and how long before 75mg began to work? Was it fairly immediate? I had the side-effects you describe up @ 375mg. Not nice.
Thx,
J.

I didn't take the selegiline long enough in order to know what it does for my depression. And I had no idea that an increased sex-drive was a possible symptom (albeit at weird times).
Dude, if I had to give up sex FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE in order to cure my depression, I would do it IMMEDIATELY. Fuck sex. I'd rather be able to live my life!

I walk around all day with a lump in my pants. It never wants to go down.

What kind of depression were you suffering from?
I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH MAJOR DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY!
***
How would you describe it?
I HAD BEEN SUFFERING WITH MAJOR FATIGUE(I COULD SLEEP 24HRS STRAIGHT) NO MOTIVATION, I DID NOT WANT TO BE AROUND PEOPLE, I COULD NOT ANSWER THE PHONE OR DOOR, I DID NOT WANT TO BE AT ANY SOCIAL EVENTS,NO CONCENTRATION, SHORT TERM MEMORY WAS SHOT,I WAS NOT ABLE TO CONTINUE MY JOB, I HAD A VERY QUICK FUSE,I FELT SUICIDAL LIFE WAS NOT WORTH LIVING.
What other medication are you taking?
> NONE,BUT I HAVE JUST BEEN ADVICED TO TAKE IMOVANE SINCE I NOW FIND IT HARD TO SLEEP MORE THAN 4HRS SINCE BEING ON THE LOWER DOSE OF EFFEXOR XR.
I FEEL THE HIGHER DOSE OF 225MG THAT I TOOK FOR 6 MTHS REALLY IS WHAT STABALIZED ME ENOUGH MENTALLY(ALTHOUGH I FELT IT KEPT ME TO NUMB)TO ALLOW ME TO TRY AND LOWER MY DOSE AND TO HAVE SUCH A GREAT SUCCESS!! IT IS ONLY NOW AFTER A TOTAL OF 6.5MTHS OFF WORK THAT I FEEL I CAN SIT AT A COMP' AND TYPE, I CAN READ A PAGE WITHOUT HAVING TO REREAD IT AGAIN AND AGAIN TO UNDERSTAND IT, I CAN HAVE FUN AND ACTUALLY ENJOY MYSELF..A RARITY FOR A LONG TIME!! THANKS FOR ASKING
LILIAN
