My doctor has given me samples of Celexa for my panic
attacks. I'm taking 10mg/daily. Is this the correct
med for panic attacks? I've seen it's for depression.

Hello there.
Paxil is the only SSRI that is "FDA-approved" for panic disorder. But many doctors consider all the SSRI's (Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Prozac, Luvox) as "one class of drugs" so they often substitute one for another. For example, Luvox is only approved for obsessive-compulsive disorder but I've seen it used for depression as well.
Your doctor is probably using celexa because it's cheaper than Paxil, especially with free samples. The dose for panic disorder is usually the same as for depression.
Let me know how it works.

Hi
I have been on Celexa for 2 years. The reason that I started was to treat major depression which was characterized with severe unfocused anxiety....all the time......no appetite and severe insomnia.
The first bout of major depression that I had was after the birth of my second child. I was put on paxil .... which took a long time to kick in. Paxil did relieve my anxiety perhaps ......too much. I also had a lot of physical side effects from Paxil [including tremendous weight gain, in ability to orgasm, excessive drowsiness, muscle spasm, inability to concentrate, neck rigidity etc....all on minimum dosage]. So against my doctors advice I discontinued the paxil after 6 months.
Low and behold 6 months later I was right back where I started. This is when I started the Celexa. With in one week I could feel the anxiety abating. I seem to be very drug sensitive and find this to be gentler to my system than the paxil. I will probably be on this drug for a very long time .....my only complaint is that after 6 months the weight had start to slowly creep up and right now I'm just trying to find a diet modification and an excercise combo that fits my hectic lifestyle and works.
BTW I'm on 20mg ... which I believe is the minimum theraputic dose ...but I may be wrong. Perhaps your doctor is ramping you up slowly.

MM is correct that the starting dose for depression is usually 20 mg. But if it's being used mainly for anxiety, 10 mg could be regarded as the minimum dose and can be very effective.

Thanks for your help. I've just been Dx with
panic attacks so it's new to me. My doctor gave me
samples and started with 10mg. I'm not sure if
it will be increased, will find out this wkend.
He said i will only take it for 6 mths. Sounds
like i need to ask him about other side effects
of celexa. Having a hard time dealing with this,
this experience is new and having doubts of what
i should take regarding all these side effects.
I hope he can cure this in 6 mths.
Thanks again for everyones response.> Hi

Hi
Everybody responds differently. Side effects I have may not be the side effects that you would have. It is really not possible to predict which side effects if any that anyone will have. For me Celexa has virtually no adverse pysical side effects .... yet initially I experienced, slightly heightened anxiety, headaches, stomach upset and my insomnia was the last symptom to disappear [3 months using sleeping pills]. So don't dispare if initially you experience some uncomfortable side effects. Keep you doctor informed and if the side effects are extreme they can help you to manage them ...for me it was the short term use of tranquilizers and sleeping pills
and lots of moral support.Good Luck
Marie
