Selegiline for Social Phobia?

Posted by Lynne on December 31, 2000, at 16:40:50

Has anyone used Selegiline alone or with another drug? Did it help with social phobia?

Thanks,
Lynne

Yes, I tried it at one point. It did not help my social phobia. The medicines that have helped are Nardil, Klonopin, Neurontin, and Paxil.

May I ask, what dosage of selegiline did you use
(e.g. under 15 mg/day or over 15 mg/day)? At
dosages above 15 mg/day selegiline loses its
relative selectivity for MAO-"B" and begins to
significantly inhibit both MAO-"A" and "B", like
the older MAOI's (e.g. Nardil, etc...). Therefore
I'm curious...

Thanks

Brad

Thanks Dwight. I have tried Klonopin before a few years ago. Do you know if Klonopin is like Xanax and Activan just longer acting? I have not tried Nardil but I have used Parnate before. Parnate did help but the weight gain was too much for me.I have heard Paxil causes weight gain also so I have not tried it. I have used most of the other SSRIs and they didn't help.

Lynne,

Even if you've tried the other SSRIs there is still a chance that Paxil might help you. I'm taking it now and it does help a little bit. If you quit the Parnate because of weight gain you probably wouldn't like Nardil because that causes even more weight gain--nonetheless in my experience Nardil is the gold standard in the treatment of social anxiety. Neurontin has worked very well for me, but I don't use it everyday now because it causes noticeable memory problems. You might try the neurontin and see--maybe it won't affect your memory in the same the way.

Klonopin - not just long-lasting Xanax/Ativan » Lynne

A controlled study of clonazepam, the generic version of Klonopin, showed remarkable effectiveness for social phobia.
( a PubMed search should turn up the article about it: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed )
I believe the same cannot be said for Xanax or Ativan. It is generally believed that something not-really-known makes Klonopin special in re: social phobia.

peace and health,

S.D.
