Remeronīs side effects/ Nortriptyline sexual prob?

Posted by PhoenixGirl on November 20, 2000, at 18:26:56

In the past few years Iīve been on Anafranil, then Celexa, which caused major sexual side effects. A couple of months ago I switched to Remeron because supposedly it doesnīt have this side effect, but it does for me! When I was off the celexa, but on the remeron for only a few weeks, I had a libido again. I was even giving unholy attention to my pillow, just like old times. But as it started to help my depression, the sexual side effects started. Itīs not as bad as with the other meds, but itīs bad enough so that I rarely think about sex. Has anyone else had this problem with Remeron?
Iīm going to try Nortriptyline, because I used to be on Imipramine long ago and I donīt remember having much of a sexual problem with it. And Nortriptyline is supposed to have fewer side effects than Imipramine. Can people tell me about their experiences with Nortriptyline and sex?

[About Remeron's sexual side effects.]

Yes, I have been on it, at 15-30mg, and on a combo of Effexor 75mg and Remeron 15mg. Both had a big effect on libido. I think this has been seen at some level in the clinical studies as well, although the manufacturer touts Remeron as being free of such effects. Remeron was good for my depression, though.

Serzone, bupropion and moclobemide are supposed to be the AD's with least sexual side effects. Bupropion can also be used with SSRI's, and it sometimes helps with their sexual side effects.

I'm trying reboxetine with Zoloft now (4mg+50mg). Things haven't settled down enough for me to be sure, but this combination seems to be ok with respect to libido.

I can't say anything about the nortriptyline, but I have the same problem with the remeron. I have found that small amounts of ritalin (even as low as 2.5 mg) totally brings my sex drive back, and works well with the remeron, although i have trouble sleeping sometimes and need to take trazodone along with the remeron to sleep. Good luck!

That is strange. In Stephan Stahl's book it says about Remeron: "By blocking serotonin 2A 2C, and 3 receptors, the side effects associated with stimulating them, especially anxiety, nausea and sexual disfunction are avoided."

It goes on to say that Remeron's main side effects are sedation and weight gain.
