Zoloft and mental illness (Voices)

Posted by Patrick on May 21, 2000, at 23:06:03

My 9 year old daughter has Chrons disease.
She was recently persrcibed Zoloft for depression.
After three weeks she began to hear voices that
said they were going to get her. She also says
she see's dead people out of the corner of her eye.
We took her to the ER 3 days ago and the Dr. (Psych)
told us to stop "Zoloft" immediately. We did,
still no changes. She takes a drug "6MP" and
pentathenol for her Chrohns Disease. She is a
very sweet child with a great disposition. She is
afraid of the voices, does not feel safe anywhere
and has talked of committing suicide. PLEASE if
anyone has heard of a similar occurrance - RESPOND, DAD

Patrick,

I really don't know much about Chron's Disease but I know a litttle about the voices. Two years ago I attempted suicide and was sent to the local psych hospital. At the time (I was 35) there were no rooms available in the adult ward and I was given a room in the children's ward. I got to see first hand what some of those kids were going through. There were a couple of kids that I got to talk to at night who may have been experiencing something similar to your daughter. They were taking an anti-psychotic called Risperdal that was reportedly helping them.

I wouldn't normally reccommend major meds for a 9 year old but if she is hearing voices and is suicidal you may want to investigate this. Also, you may want to look into putting her in a hospital for a short stay. They have pdocs that will be able to monitor her better than you can do at home. Suicidal ideations at that age (or any age) are very serious. Maybe you could check with the ER psychiatrist about a reputable hospital in your area so she could get some full time care for a while.

Best of luck and my prayers will be with your family.

Chris

Dear Dad,

My heart goes out to you and your family, this is indeed a serious matter. First thing though, do you mean "Crohn's Disease" instead of "Chron's Disease"? Because, as I understand it which is nothing near depth-defying, Crohn's Disease causes certain meds to have quite different results than those intended. With auditory and/or visual disturbances, could you be dealing with toxic levels of the currently discontinued SSRI, Zoloft in this case? Or possibly a manic reaction to the Zoloft?

If she has Crohn's Disease, wouldn't that affect the meds ability to be processed and cleared from her body?

Is she on cortisone or a steroid ? This can cause a psychotic reaction.
