SAMe for depression

Posted by Kathie on April 6, 2000, at 18:25:06

I have read a lot about SAMe for depression and wondered if anybody on this board has tried it as an alternative to chemical drugs. Other than the expense, everything I have read suggest there are no side effects, except perhaps your joints will heal if you have arthritis. I am not sure I would be willing to give up my SSRI, unless the weight gain finally drives me insane enough...not to mention the skrunken libido, that sort of sucks too.

I'd love to hear your 2 cents worth!

Kathy: I've tried SAM-e and found it to be very activating, to much for me because I somtimes get panic attacks. If you dont have anxiety problems try it. I've read a lot of people doing better on it without any of the ssri side effects you mentioned. Good luck Andrew

> Funny I thought I just posted on this topic, but I don't see my post. Lo and behold last night at around 11 pm I could feel the very instant my Sam-e, after five days, kicked in. You can't beat that. I've been through just about every AD in the book; they either pooped out or side effects were intolerable. I'm a teacher, so my depression really escalates from Feb. to June. If this stuff works for me, I'll have the perfect treatment. With other AD's by the time they reach their full potency it's June. I will report back as the weeks progress.

Wow, fast response..thanks so much Andrew and Leonora! Now my next question is does anybody know the easiest way to get SAMe..I live in Canada and it has not been approved for sale her yet. I think I would like to try it as an alternative, because I really don't like being as chubby as I currently am. I weigh more now than I did at 9 months pregnant with 2 of my 4 kids..its pretty disturbing...almost enough to bring on depression of its own!! Paxil makes you feel great, but it sure packs on the weight, yet the "side effects" sheet that comes with the prescription says "decreased appetite" and nothing at all about increased appetite or weight gain as a side effect. Only in Canada, eh? Pity.

Kathie,

I've tried SAMe off and on about six different times. Each time I felt definite improvement by day 3. The only problem was my $20 box of pills was gone after just 5 days and then it was time to buy another. I just couldn't afford that. $20 every 5 days can add up fast. That's the best price I could find anywhere, at Wal*Mart.

You could do one of two things. If you know someone in the USA, have them purchase Nature Made SAMe for you at Wal*Mart and ship it to you. In USA it's just an over-the-counter supplement right next to the vitamins and herbs and stuff.

There are plenty of online suppliers to mailorder it. I think the cheapest I've seen is at mothernature.com because they also carry the Nature Made brand. You could buy from them. Most all other suppliers--health food stores, online mailorder outfits, etc--are way too pricey. Prices of $40 to $50 for a 20-pill box is pretty common. And outrageous. Mothernature.com's Nature Made SAMe is reasonable in comparison.

From personal experience I endorse SAMe and have only positive things to say about it....except for the strain it puts on my wallet. :) JohnL

>Yep, the price is a bummer, but I bought a month'sworth (Naturemade) at Costco for $45.99. That seems to be less than anywhere else I've seen. Do you know anyone in the states who has access to Costco?

Dear all,

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is SAMe?

P.S. I'm from the UK.

If you go to www.mothernature.com and do a search on Sam-e, there's a lot of information there on possible uses. They have excellent prices and I can say from experience that their service and delivery is top notch.
