Tardive akethesia

Posted by Karen Cooper on January 21, 2000, at 15:36:29

I am a 55 year old female suffereing from Tardivve Akethesia and Dystonia. I have a continual inner restlessness and constant outward body movement.
the movement includes my jaw, neck, arms and legs.
Due to the movement I have devoped an erotic sleep pattern. I have been informed by the leading clinics that the illness was caused by a mismamangement of medication while I was being treated for symptons of supposed Tourettes Syndrom. I am presently taking a new drug called Tetrobenizene which is only available out of Canada and that has helped somewhat. I also take an anti depressant sot hat I can function on a daily basis. I have recently been researching the use of deep brain stimulation surgery that is presently being used for Parkinsons patients with excellent results. While this has not been used for Tardive Akethesia or Dystonia they beleive that it may help. I am looking for people out there with similar cases. Please respond via this thread or E-mail ACooper879@aol.com

I have first hand experience with someone who had truncal tardive dyskinesia which sounds similiar to what you describe. It responded to clozapine. The symptoms are not completely gone but greatly reduced. Any long term effects and outlook are not known. You might mention this medication to your Doctor to see what he thinks. I hope this is helpful.

Dear Karen,
I am so sorry you are suffering so much. I, too, developed akathesia on an atypical neuroleptic- and it was easily the most horrible side effect I've ever experienced from a drug. Once I discontinued the medication, my symptoms gradually waned and were gone within a few months. I assume you've tried artane or cogentin for your symptoms, I'm unfamiliar with the drug you are taking. How long have you been off your medication (I'm assuming neuroleptic)? I don't know what kind of anti-depressant you are using-but some classes, especially the atypicals like asendin can worsen TD. I hope the medication you're taking now will help further without having to resort to surgery. I hope you have filed a complaint against the physician who was responsible for your condition. Take care.
