Klonopin v. Serzone for Social Anxiety

Posted by Snowie on December 25, 1999, at 22:01:46

I'm considering trying Klonopin for social anxiety, but I'm also considering trying Serzone, also for social anxiety. After reading many of the posts, it would seem that each has its pros and cons. Is there anybody who has tried both who can give me some insight? I understand that with Serzone there is usually a waiting period of several weeks before the full effect kicks in, whereas with Klonopin you generally get relief fairly quickly, but that's not an issue for me since I don't mind the wait. Which have you preferred for social anxiety over the long haul? Also, if you augment or augmented Serzone or Klonopin with another medication, please advise what and why.

Thanks!

Snowie

Snowie,

I take Klonopin, Nortriptyline, Ritalin, and Lithium. I'm a walking chemical lab.
I tried Serzone earlier this year and can say w/o a doubt that it is, IMO, the worst drug I've ever taken. It doesn't seem to work at all for most people and has a nasty SE of turning the taker into a rage-a-holic. I guess if it works, it's okay, but I wouldn't count on it.

Hi,

I have experience with both drugs. Serzone was horrible. I was hyper and had continuous gory, bloody, violent thought patterns. Just horrendous. The Klonopin works. I have been on it for 10 days at extremely low dose because I cannot afford to have motor co-ordination problems as I drive a city bus. (titrating up from .125mg - now at .25mg per day) and I can testify having been out to a xmas dinner with high powered types that I was able to maintain and tell stories and be funny and all that with only a minimum of heart beat and brain stoppage. I recommend the Klonopin. Lots of good info here as well from others like Rick if you do a search. All the very best to you in the new year brave one,

Michele

Snowie, I tried Serzone (450 mg/day max) and liked it a lot. I felt MUCH less socially anxious. The emotional lability (rapid mood swings, from tearful to angry) stopped by the second week, then I just felt peaceful and no longer depressed. I'd still be taking it if it also helped with OCD (e.g., continuous music people complain about on the list). Best wishes.--Cindy W.

Hi Noa,
Meds don't seem to be getting the job done but I guess I need to be patient. Although my gut tells me I'm not on the right track. Can't explain that. I'm supposed to call my doc Wed and give her an update.
Spent Christmas alone. Didn't turn on a tv or radio. Just wanted it to go away. It did.

Snowie, just remember the standard Babble disclaimer -- your mileage may vary. Maybe the Klonopin's worth a first try since it does work so quickly. Then again, I'm biased since it's working for me and I've never tried Serzone.

... if only it wouldn't come back!

Phil,

Although Bob's disclaimer "your mileage may vary" must be stated first, let me remind you of how discouraged I was about the meds working, and I am starting to feel better now. Heck, I don't need to remind you, just read all those posts. I think you started the lithium a bit after me. Hang in there. I didn't start to notice anything appreciable until I had been on it a while, and now that I am on a higher dose, i definitely notice much more stability in my mood. Of course, it is still "short term". Hang in there and keep us posted.

Thanks Noa

I think I started Lithium a few weeks after you;I did go back and read your posts. Seems our depressions are really similar-similar issues or whatever.
I must say that I felt like I had been hit by a truck today. Dazed and confused, tired, lifeless, and slow. And, wouldn't you know it, I was shorthanded at work and extremely busy. I am soooo tired of working for a living but I would make a lousy crook...show too much emotion.

Hi Snowie:

Those are 2 good drugs for SP.
I have used both but Klonopin is more effective.
Each is best used best usually when augmenting.
An exception is Klonopin by itself but depression
may occur in long term.

I recently put up a website with lots of info
on meds and combos for SP, etc.

It's at www.socialfear.com

Good luck!!
