Why antidepressants stop working for some people?

Posted by messy on September 7, 1999, at 7:26:29

I was talking to a friend last night about her long
history of having taken SSRIs which work for a while
and then stop working. Also, not all SSRIs work, and
she has a tough time while figuring out what the next
drug should be. Now that we understand better why
and how these things work, have there been any
discoveries about why they fizzle out for some people?
Are there non-psychiatric health problems which would
cause this effect?

Thanks,

"messy"

Very many people experience the same problem with the SSRI medications. You will often find it refered to as poop-out. I have yet to see anything that points to a firm understanding as to why it happens. For me, augmentation of the SSRI with Naltrexone has been miraculous… like a rebirth after 35 years of depression. It is not a well known augmentation and your friend’s Dr may need some background to be willing to try it. Here are some links to more info. My full story is here on Psycho-Babble beginning February 1999.
