Klonopin,Wellbutrin questions

Posted by dave on February 3, 1999, at 0:45:07

Hi All, I'm new here and like this forum. I was
not having any problems or taking any medication
prior to mid last year. I was prescribed Prednisone
for a bad skin rash and devoloped a sever pyschotic
reaction from it. I had to give up a good job and go
in the hospital. I had a depression episode in 1982--
thats about the extent of my history. When in the
hospital recently, I was put on 2mg a day of Risperdal.
and ativan as needed for anxiety. I have since switched
to klonopin and am down to 1/2mg a day of risperdal. I
tried Zoloft but didnt like the side effects. I have
been on Wellbutrin SR for about 2 1/2 wks, I'm at 300mg
a day, half in the am, half at night.

I'm feeling more like myself as the Risperdal is lessening.
I was out of control while on it and benzos for all of Dec 98
and ran a credit card to the limit, with help from someone I
met in the hospital. I think that the Wellbutrin is
helping my depression (have been lethargic for a month)
but some of the side effects possible from it look as
bad as the Prednisone. I'm starting to feel paranoid
that my best & only real friend for 12 yrs now doesnt
like me anymore. He lives 500mi away and I cant visit
for $ reasons. The wellbutrin seems to have heightened
my awareness too much or something. Another possible
reason is that I am afraid I'm getting hooked on klonopin.
I take about 1mg every other day. By the second day I
feel like I'm going nuts. I go to my Dr thursday so
I will tell her all this too but I was hoping some of
you here could make some comments or suggestions.
Can someone tell me what the withdrawal symptoms from
stopping klonopin are?
Thank you
dave

James here.....

With a good doc and a careful slow reduction in dose you will not experience withdrawal symptions.

Dave,

Wellbutrin certainly can increase anxiety. Probably the best bet for reducing anxiety as far as an antidepressant goes is Remeron, though your mileage may vary. One other question. What's wrong with being "hooked" on the klonopin? You're not abusing it; you're looking for relief from anxiety. If you become physically dependent on it, as one can with K, it just means you need to taper off slowly when you want to stop. So, I wouldn't think so much in terms of "addiction" and being "dependent" as being a necessarily bad thing. Also, why take 1 every other day? If you're feeling constant anxiety and rebound anxiety between the doses, why not take, say .5 or 1mg each day. K has a long half life, but most people who take it take it at least once a day.

Best of luck to you,

Matt

Thanks Matt, good points. I even smiled on reading that 'mileage may vary'.
More piece of my puzzle are: I've never had a real
diagnose (which kinda scares me--maybe its too bad
for me to know),
I have been total and believe that I'm codependent.
I've been pretty close to completely socially
isolated for years(I know thats not good). and my
only reactions to wellbutrin seem to be itching.
I'm 36 and never married--I mainly think I need
to get out more.
I sure appreciate the feedback.

Dave, Don't worry about the klonopin. I take 1 mg per day and expect I will the rest of my life just for maintenance. A little goes a long way, but stretching it to every other day may be a bit much. As to Wellbutrin making you act funky, talk to your doc. I can only tolerate teeny tiny doses of anti-depressants before I get just totally wacko if not psychotic. The most Wellbutrin I ever took in a day was 75 mg and that was just right. Everyone is sensitive differently to anti-depressants and your doc can help adjust it so you feel good but not out of control. Aren't we all a bit codependent and ironically isolators at the same time? ;) Shell

I love this list, I feel like I have a bunch of friends now!
I hope you all dont mind that I tell whats happening
with me a little bit.

I went to my Doctor, she is keeping me on the 1/2mg
of Risperdal a day and I feel reassured by her and
you people here to not feel guilty when I need to
take a Klonopin--they sure do help. I am to come off the
Wellbutrin, mainly for the itching/rash but also
for the slight paranoid feelings it has been giving
me. Next, we will try Celexa. I hope I have the
good results many of you have had with it and few side
effects. Also, my Doc said its ok to start looking
for a job now--thats good, I'm really getting bored
and broke. I appreciate the support I get here and
hope all of you are doing well also.

I too have been on Wellbutrin and had very similar side effects. It made me very paranoid and hyper-sensitive emotionally. I would have constant crying spells over little things... and I'm not usually like that. Once I stopped taking it, I felt normal after a couple of days. Dave, please let me know how Celexa works for you as I will be going to my doctor soon to have my medication changed.
Thanks,
Heidi

Thanks for you comments, Heidi! Yes, I admitt I have had
some very upsetting and unusual feelings while I
was on it too. I'll definitely let you know how
the Celexa works.
Take Care and Good Luck, Heidi.

Dave,
I found out the hard way that you can take too much Wellebutrin to get the symptoms you mentioned. I was at 300 mg/day and had a lot of trouble with irratation. Dropped to 150/mg day and I am doing good. Talk with your doc...

Thanks for your reply, Sam, I dropped back to 150mg
a day for a week before I went off it completely.
It took a week after that for the itching and stuff to stop.
My doc took me off it. We'll try Celexa next.
Thanks again for your input, Sam
Sincerely
dave

Good point Theresa, thanks for your reply. This is what
I have started to do. My doc agreed, take about
1/2mg a day. Thanks again

Since Wellbutrin is active in the dopamine area, your paranoia makes sense, It's the psychotic symptom reappearing. Don't give up the Risperdal!

Thank you, yes, my doc does want to keep me on the
risperdal. Thank God that doesnt give me bad side
effects, wish i could say the same about the SSRI's
i've tried. I'll keep trying.

Hi Dave,
My name is Hooman Tajbakhsh and I would like to learn about about your pyschotic reaction when you took prednisone. My brother who is in medical school has had a history of depression. He diagnosed himself (not correctly of course) with PAN which is an inflammation of the vascular system and he thought all his symptoms were related to this 'disease'. He convinced an ER doctor to give him a 128 mg dose of prednisone (which is the medication for PAN) for 7 days which he took in 3 days. In a matter of few days (2-3 weeks) he had a pyschotic episode an he has since been in the hospital. He claims to be god and so on.. Please respond to my email if you have more details of your case and how you were able to deal with the reaction. Thank you.
