What will happen to Babble...

Posted by tofuemmy on April 22, 2007, at 12:48:49

...when all the deputies go on break or quit? How many insults are they expected to tolerate before their own mental health suffers? Clearly that is already happening.

Personally, for their sake, I DO hope they all quit. Of course, I don't give a flip about Babble - except that it helps some of my friends. I worry about what would happen to them if Babble disappeared due to an Admin who wants out, and deputies who give up.

It does hurt. And I do want to give up.

I really don't understand how people can believe the things they're saying, when if what they were saying was true, how could the administrative board looks like it does right now? If you see who is certainly not blocked, and not even pbc'd, how can it be said that we weild hammers on those who disagree with us?

If you look at my PBC's over the past few days, how can it be seen as favoritism?

I try so hard to do what is right, because doing what is right is important to me. I cry when I read posts, but I don't retaliate with blocks or PBC's. I only give them when something is in violation of the civility guidelines of this site. I try to do what Dr. Bob would do under the circumstances.

I keep repeating my mantra to myself, and I keep reminding myself that whatever people may think of me, I know what's in my heart.

But I do want to give up. I feel so hurt. So many people saying these things are people I've spent time with in chat, people I've tried to be supportive to over the years. People who should know that not only do I not act vindictively, but I go out of my way to not hold grudges. How many times have I responded supportively when I didn't have to, and when I could have thought I had reason not to. But I try not to think of individual acts and to see a person as the whole of who they are. I try to see the good people are to others, even if they don't particularly seem to care for me.

I do want to give up.

There are other deputies, and maybe they don't feel so hurt, and maybe they don't feel so discouraged.

And I can see how this can be read all wrong too. Dinah thinking she's so good, Dinah putting down others. When all I'm trying to express is Dinah hurting and Dinah trying to do what is right despite hurting.

Lately, it seems civility has been thrown out the window when it involves expressing opinions concerning the deputies who help administer this site. Without pointing at anyone in particular, I get the sense that more than one poster in recent days may have been hoping to provoke a block during a discussion of issues regarding deputy decisions.

Even if you disagree with a deputy's actions, common decency should prevail. There's no good reason to make someone feel bad about themselves just because you think they make mistakes.

I'm so sorry you are hurting Dinah. You've given SO much to this site for many, many years. I don't think most people here realize how long you have given of yourself for this place. You are a kind and generous person who wears her big heart on her sleeve.

All of the deputies deserve the gentle understanding of our posters. Even if someone disagrees, or thinks a deputy hosed up - we are all smart enough to express that in a constructive, not divisive way.

I hope Babblonia learns something from the pain of others right now, before it's too late.

Dinah -

I support you and your actions 100%. I never venture on this board, and rarely on social. But I came over here to see what was going on.

I just want to let you know that you are doing a great job.

I'm sorry your feelings are getting hurt. That's sad when all you are trying to do is help people not get hurt.

You are terrific!!

((((((((((Dinah)))))))))) I agree there is no favoritism. I'm sorry you're hurting. I know you try your best to be a fair and just deputy.

That's a very good mantra to have.

I wish we could all get together for coffee in person. Then maybe there wouldn't be this mess. Maybe in person it's different.

And the support, of course. To everyone who has expressed support for deputies or me, thank you. It helps a great deal.

So this is what procrastination gets me... Last weekend I decided to take a leave from working as a deputy, since Babble has been taking time away from something quite important to me. I realized that the time I spent during the day was not inline with my goals, so I have to make a change. I wanted to let the other deputies and Dr. Bob know ahead of time, and I didn't get those messages written and sent before I wandered knee-deep into another conflict.

So here's my official notification: I am taking a leave as a deputy as of tomorrow morning. I expect to this to last a minimum of two months. I'd like to say I'll still post for myself during that time, but I don't know how that will work out. I'm thinking at the moment it might be too distracting.

I'm still available by Babblemail or by email, which for the moment is listed with the deputy info. I also have a gmail address with the same name as my yahoo. I hope anyone who wants to stay in touch will feel free to.

To Dinah, Auntie Mel, Racer, 10derheart, Scratchpad, MarkH, and Dr. Bob (please Dog, don't let me have forgotten anyone...), I've learned a lot from you all, and I want to say thank you for that while I'm thinking about it so I don't forget.

Namaste

Maybe I am missing something, buy this seems to be a statement lacking in sensitivity, given the threads above where it is suggested favoritism and revenge are the motivators for some deputies. I see the deputies bending over backwards to be fair
yet some seem to strongly feel otherwise.

Humor it tricky, it does not always read "out there" the way you expect it to.

I don't know what threads you are referring to. I haven't read anything suggesting favoritism or revenge as motivators. I don't read everything on the board tho. I'm sorry I appeared insensitive.

Please forgive me GG. I retract my post. Don't PBC me.

I have to say, as much as I disagree or dislike some of the things said, I keep my mouth shut for fear of making things worse. However, now I think maybe that silence from me and others may be misinterpreted as non-support. I do support the deputies, and the posters as well. I think things just get a bit jumbled in the communication process. But regardless, I think the deputies are doing an amazing job with a very difficult task. Keep up the good work yall! There are more people behind you than you think.

For all the time you've put into Babble. I know how time consuming it can be, and I suspect it's part of the reason I'm always having trouble with my time management.

You're terrific, you know, and I'll miss you terribly. But I certainly understand. The very best of luck with your goals, and kudos to you for putting your priorities where you need them to be.

And don't forget to stay in touch when you're away (if you have the time). I promise not to talk Babble, no matter how much I value your advice and perspective. :)

Nobody asked but this just reenforces my suspicions that babble will soon be a thing of the past. When Dr. Bob went to Texas that was the last time I saw him around. Too much responsibility for a few Deputies. GG I will miss you. Bobby are you volunteering? Love Phillipa

Oh, I don't think this is the end of babble! Its always been an up and down thing. I don't know where Bob is, but he certainly can't spend his whole life here. And if a hard spell means the need for a break for a deputy or poster, that's just a way to deal with things. Taking a break when you need it is better than staying until you burn completely out. Don't despair, negativity breeds negativity. We just have to stay positive and move past it. I for one am not going anywhere.

After some thought I decided to post on this thread afterall. I'd like to clarify that the motive behind my 'If I Had a Hammer' thread above was not an oblique attack on the deputies and their supporters, it was to raise awareness of the possibility that *we all, right now* may be the unwitting participants of a virtual/online version of the Stanford Prison/Milgram experiments. If so, what I *was* obliquely referring to was that it might be high time to blow the whistle and end the experiment? It's patently clear that people are now getting hurt and emotionally traumatized by the experience (many who were vulnerable and emotionally frail to begin with I might add), and I think it's time to end it.

When I first came to Babble, Bob interacted much more with posters. These days, he stays out of it, except for administrative duties. His presence or absence on the boards really isn't the point, is it? The point is the support and education we provide for one another. That's what Babble is about.

Babble won't end, just because Bob is away for a few weeks. In fact, Babble wouldn't necessarily end if Bob decided to hand it off entirely to someone else. This is a peer support board, not a cult of personality.

Right. I am on lists that have existed since the 1980's, where ownership and/or moderation has been passed through many different people. On one list we lost both the hosting server and the list owner, when the college could no longer offer hosting and the owner did not have enough time to continue. So the list members bought the domain
and found another org to host it.
