I am Bipolar and ADD, with compulsive disorders. I am not as crazy feeling but I feel really mean. I dont know if I am making any sense to anyone, because I rarely do to myself anymore.
Stacy,
Topamax does make some people cranky and mean, but it tends to pass after a few weeks to a month. I was kind of unpleasent (I don't know if I am allowed to use the b**** word - but that's what I really was!) at first. Then I noticed I had a cool head while driving, what a change that was.
But it might be the Wellbrutin, like Gal said. That can crank some people up too.

I have been on a variety of anti siezure meds since I was young, from Phenobarb to tegretol, trileptol and now topamax. I'm 31 and have been on topamax for 9 months now in addition to loosing 50 pounds in that time period I have also lost something else that is much more disturbing and embarassing and i was wondering if anyone else has run across this to the extreme that I have or if I may have some other problem.I have found it very difficult to get an erection on demand at the most critical times if you know what i mean. If i do they are not fully erect and i cannot sustain it. I know that this is a mild side effect of most siezure meds but Im desperate as is my love life any help would be appreciated. thank you.

I have been on Topamax now for 2 weeks. I am on it with Effexor for depression. I just got up to 150 mg. per day. My doctor put me on it for depression and specifically because the last meds I was on made me gain 30 pounds which has made my depression terribly worse. I have read from so many people that they lost weight on it. I was wondering if you could all tell me how long it took for you to start losing weight and what strength you were on? Thanks for your help!

Hi Nycole, I've been on Topamax for 2 months now. I take 200mg a day. May I ask what meds caused you to gain thed30 Lbs.? Of course that can make one's depression worse unfortunately-it did mine-I gained 60-70. Anyway, I started at 25mg of Topamax 3 times a day and gradually increased the dose to 100 then 150 then 200. I first lost my appetite at about the second week, and by the first month-I had lost about 10 Lbs. I have lost a total of 24 Lbs.
Let me know if you have anymore questions-be glad to help.gal

Gal..
I was gaining weight on Effexor and Depakote, but the new doctor I see now was mad that my old doctor had me on the Depakote at all because first of all I gained so much weight and second I am not bipolar I am clinically depressed. So, when I came to this new doc, he had a big ol' mess to deal with...hehe! Anyway, I need to take off like 40 pounds now becasue the weght gain is bringing my clinical depression down to lows I never knew it had. I have been on the Effexor for about 2 years now, but I am increasing my dose now from 300 to 400. I am praying that increase and the Topamax will start to help here soon for the depression and weight loss. Did the weight loss just kind of start on its own or were you really tryng to diet and exersise also?? Sorry I am asking so many questions :)

Nycole, I was on Depakote also and I gained a lot of weight and also had the infamous hair loss thing! I'm happy that you have a doc now that knows you're clinically depressed and not bipolar! sheesh yes-what a mess that must have been. When I started to see the weight loss with the Topamax I just started to want to eat healthier. I started to eat salads-tons of them. I also drink tons of water. I haven't exercised-but I will start again soon-I am somewhat lazy. Have you heard of Propel? It's fitness water, it has all different flavors, no caffeine, no fruit juice, vit C, vit E, Potassium, etc. they really are great! They have helped with the weight loss also.
Do you think that the Effexor has caused you any weight gain at all? What dose are you at of the Topa again?> Gal..

Pardon my interrupting, but when it comes to weight gain/loss, I find its rarely considered rude.
I was on Effexor xr, and gained about 30 lbs really quickly, I was then put on Paxil, I didn't gain weight but didn't lose any either. My Pdoc
put me on topamax simply to counter the possible effect of the weight gain from the Paxil, because he knows how devasting it is (One of the few who takes it seriously)
I was at about 150 mgs, and the weight just dropped off. Which is incredible cause it made me so tired at first. I'm now at 200mg, and
Though I haven't weighed myself, I can wear clothes I couldn't wear 3 years ago. I've lost about 4 sizes in 3 months. I didn't even notice a significant appetite decrease, it must work on metabolic factors as well.
I just thought I'd let you know.Oh by the way I'm not prone to drastic weight loss. Even when I was put on dexedrine and thyroid meds I didn't drop weight like that.

Hi Gabbix, do you take 200mg all at night of the Topamax now or in the day??? Oh My Gosh!!!!!!!! I can't believe you mentioned something-it gets me excited because I gained a lot of weight on some of the other meds out there over the past years. You said this>>>>>>"I didn't even notice a significant appetite decrease, it must work on metabolic factors as well." I want to do some research on this. I think there is so much more going on with this Topamax than people know. I read somewhere that in 2004 the FDA is going to market it as an appetite suppressant (another pseudo-Phen-Phen, but better) You said that you didn't notice a significant appetite decrease but still lost weight. I'm at the point now on Topamax, that my appetite is slowly coming back, but I'm still losing and I'm thinking a lot about this same concept about the issue of Topamax being a metobolic working substance-the med has some astounding chemistry.

When I am reading your message I feel like I am reading my own message! You and I sound like exact the same person! I have been on Effexor xr for a couple years now. I was told that Effexor does not cause weight gain, but who knows?? They tell us so many different things now! A combo of Depokote and about 3 months of really bad depression gained me 30 pounds and made my depression abut 30 times worse. I just moved from North Carolina to Ohio , so I got a new doctor 2 and a half weeks ago and he's the one that put me on Topamax and I've increased the effexor XR from 300 to 450. The past couple days have been the first days I have seen an inprovement with my depression in months. I have no clue if I have lost any weight or not yet because I am afraid to get on the scale ....hehe. But if what all these other people are saying is true....then I will!! If I do start to lose weight, it will probably change my life!

OK, help me out here cuz I am a little bummed out. I've been on the Topamax for almost 3 weeks now (in addition to effexor that I have been on for 2 years). My doc put me on it for 2 reasons. One, because my clinical deprssion has hit toal rock bottom in the past 2 months. Two, because my last meds made me gain 30 pounds which made my depression that much worse. SO, I have been reading all of these wonderful success stories on here about people losing all this weight and feeling great and it helping their depression. I haven't lost a single pound and now I am so worried it's not going to work for me. Any advice??

If you've started the Topamax at a relatively low dose, which is likely, don't panic,
It wasn't until I reached the 150 range that I started losing all the weight, and for most people its higher than that. Now that I've been at 200 for about a month I notice a weekly drop.
For instance some jeans I couldn't wear last week
to the day, I could wear yesterday..
So don't give up!Galkeepinon I take most of mine at night, cause it makes me so sleepy, I take, 50 mgs in the late afternoon and 150 right before bed.
The plans to market it as a weight loss drug
were stopped because their were too many side effects. Not really health side effects though,
the tingling of the feet, which I get sometimes,
and the "stupids" which I still get in waves, but definitely less than I did.Still the weight loss right now is more important than anything. The extra weight just devastated me after everything else you know, it was like
one more godd*** thing. I'm sure you understand

I started on very small dose of Topomax because the doc still had me on depakote so I started on 25 mg a day and gradually upped me to 200mg a day. I started losing weight at about 50 to 100 mg a day, which was about a month or two into topomax. I just literally lost my appetite. But the best thing now is that topomax really works for me. I am happy and content with my life and I have not regained my weight although I have regained some of of appetite I have not regained any of my weight because I've learned new ways of eating. I love topamax.
I did deal with many of the side effects at first but now I feel fine.

Please give Topomax some time. It takes a Little bit more than 2-3 weeks to work, especially to lose weight. I think it works for most people in terms of weight loss. I know it doesn't work for all, but for most it does. The best thing is that it probably won't hurt to try it. It does have some side effects that at first are uncomfortable but they go away after awhile. I had tingling in my feet, loss of memory, disorientation, but it all comes back. The loss of appetite lasts a long time and even when your appetite comes back you've learned to eat better and you crave different foods. I now crave healthier foods and want to eat better. I'm also not hungry all the time. I don't seem to gain weight easily either. I'm not losing anymore but I haven't gained either. I feel great. If you have any questions, ask away. I was on depakote before and I've been on every medication you can think of. I am bipolar.

Hi Nycole, I sound like you eh? lol sometimes that happenes lol I was told also that Effexor was one of the very few that had the side effect of many people NOT gaining weight on it too-but who knows is right. I'm sorry to hear about your round with Depakote, in my opinion-I just did not and do not like that medication-I see no good in it-just my opinion. (unless of course it has helped someone tremendously) I'm sure it has maybe done wonders for a lot of people though. How was your increase on Effexor?? I only take 75mg. Your dose of 450 is far above that wow!!!
How did the increasing of the med go for you-I'm really interested in that in case I stick to it and increase it down the road. So glad to hear you feel you are seeing an improvement in your depression lately than in the past months-awesome!!! I hope it continues.
Yep-losing weight, even a little makes ya feel great! I know since I've even lost the weight I have on the Topamax I feel good and I hope and pray that it continues-I gained a lot on different meds over the years and I'm just not meant to be overweight. It had made my depression so much worse-now I feel like you! LOL I wish you luck and you wish me luck k?Let me know how you're doing.

Nycole, hi again. okay, for me regarding the Topamax--give it time! I didn't notice the real weight loss until at least about a month, and remember it may be different for you. What is your dosage again? When I noticed even a 6 pound loss I was only at 75mg a day and only about 3 weeks into it then suddenly real fast-the weight started coming off-and I mean fast. Then, as I increased it, the weight continued to come of faster. Example: I weighed myself every day for a week, in that whole week-I lost a total of 11 Lbs.-this is just an example. Topamax killed my appetite. I was also on Lithium during that time and it was making me sick but Topamax gave me no desire to eat-you see my body was still getting used to it. Yours will too. Don't worry. Give it some more time. Believe me, you are talking to the "Instant Gratification Queen" here. I was patient and I white knuckled it out-but ya know-I didn't even have to do that-I just took it everyday and it's been 2 months now and I'm still losing and my moods are doing ok-I have good and bad days more good then bad--it's the Effexor I am trying to decide if I am going to stay on it or not.
So hang in there and I look forward to hearing some success from you about the Topamax okay?

Hi LBcats, May I ask how much weight you think you lost that was attributed to Topamax? I've been on it for a little over 2 months now and have lost about 24 Pounds. Last night I went out to dinner-was craving food-kinda hungry-I ordered a lot and once I started eating-BAM I was full-the food almost made me vomit-my point is-is that my appetite has slowly been returning so I hear you here in your post when you say that your appetite does come back. I thought my appetite would be gone forever while on Topamax. I've been on every med you can think of too and I'm also bipolar. What is your dosage on the Topamax? You also mentioned that you had tingling in your feet, loss of memory, disorientation, but it all came back? Do you remember how long those side effects lasted? I've gotten the same ones. In the beginning of my treatment I also got very tired but that has gone away for the most part. This med has given me the feeling not so much of a "I don't care about anything" attitude, but more of a "I can handle life" attitude, is it this way with you in a way?
Would love to hear.
Thank you so much,
Gal

Hi Gabbix, it was kind of like that with me also-it wasn't until maybe the 150mg range until I really really noticed the weight loss. It's interesting you take 150 at night and 50 in the late afternoon. What is the reasoning behind that???
Really???? The plans to market Topamax as a weight loss drug were stopped? I didn't know that. I get the tingling of the feet bad-it is so damn annoying LOL-funny sometimes but still annoying. I guess that side effect is a heck of a lot easier than gaining weight by far!!!!!
YES!!!the weight loss right now is more important than anything to me also but the mood stabililzation is right up there with it too, really. The extra weight just devastated me too. Seroquel really packed on the pounds for me. I think between stopping that med and starting the Topamax, those are the reasons I've lost weight-because I haven't exercised in a while-so it certainly isn't that.
Hope to hear back,
Gal

As far as I can tell, I didn't have weight gain from the Effexor, only the Depokote. I have never had any side effects from the Effexor, well only good ones. I think it is a very good depression and anxiety medication. I am on such a high dose because I have been on it for almost 3 years now. If your doctor wants you to go to a higher dose, I would say that would be a good decision because it really works great. Thanks for your help and encouragement and I wish you the same luck! I'll keep checking back for updates!

Hi Gal,
I'm on 200 mg of Topomax. 100 in the morning and 100 at bedtime. I told you my appetite is back but it's funny I just said that because I spend a week with my sister and she told me I don't eat a thing. So do most people, so I guess I'm not as hungry as I thought. I'm like you, when I go to a restaurant, I order all this stuff and then I'm full right away. Everyone asks me why I didn't eat and the truth is I'm full. I'm at a standstill with my weight right now at 20 lbs less than what I weight before. I love it. I'm at a great size and I love the way I feel with topomax. I don't have a no care attitude although sometimes I do have an "all fun" attitude and sometimes that's not healthy for me. Most people get tired with it. I don't I get the opposite. During the day, I get energy. I think it is supposed to slow me down a bit. How much to you take and when do you take it? How does it make you feel? Sleepy, or happy or energetic? Let me know more. Before this I was on deepakote. Topomax is much better. The side effects for me lasted a good 2 months but now I now my patience was worth it.

Hi LB,
I am currently taking 50mg of Zoloft and 150mg of Wellbutrin. The Zoloft has worked great in the past but caused weight gain...I tried other SSRI's but they all make me gain so I went back to Zoloft and added the Well to help control my cravings. I've only been on the Well a week but it is causing a lot of anxiety and I feel sedated most of the day. I am not bi polar- I was first diagnosed with dysthymia but then with major depresssion. Have you heard of Topamax working with Zoloft? Is it a safe drug? I am afraid of long term effects from these drugs. I need something to help control my weight and I won't beat the depression until I feel good about my body. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi Linda, that's right you're on the same dosage as I am of Topamax. Same time too. Well, I just went to the grocerystore: rice pudding, shortbread cookies, ice cream, Propel water, (like you want to hear my shopping list hehe) my point: I got home and I'm not even hungry-going through the isles made me ill-I'm just not hungry!!! LOL My brother is like wow-your appetite just ain't what it used to be-I'm like yay people are noticing-but better yet I've lost 2 sizes in my jeans. It's funny because I'm at a standstill too at about 22 Lbs now with the weight loss-I just keep drinking the water and mostly eat salads and turkey slices-the good stuff just appeals to me more. Poor Dreyers isn't going to be getting my business much longer LOL
I get energy during the day too and I have to be careful of the mania because I always have to make sure I don't have a fall into a depression afterward. A fine line......
Now that I've been on Topamax for a little over 2 months it really more or less makes me neither energetic or sleepy. At first it made me sleep like crazy. It has helped my depression and it's not even an AD. That is what amazes me. And that's why I'm wondering if I even need this Effexor.
OMG yes, I was on Depakote-no way not for me. you know that drill-I bet.
You sound so much like me-exactly-my patience was worth it too-so, so, so, so worth it!
Crossing my fingers, hoping, and praying that Topamax works for a good long time, and if my doc has to up the dose-so be it-I feel pretty good on it and I have faith in Topamax, hope you do too.Gal
> Hi Gal,
> I'm on 200 mg of Topomax.

Yes, I am sticking it out with the Topamax. I have been taking it for almost 3 weeks now. For the past couple days I am finally seeing the light with it because it is really starting to help my depression a lot. I also take Effexor, but I needed something else to help boost it because my depression has been so bad the past couple months and I gained so much weight from other meds. I am still waiting for the weight loss effects and praying they will come soon because I need them so very much. The weight gain with the depression is such a vicious cycle. My advice to you is to definitely stick it out on the Topamax! You will see great results for your depression :)
