Dawn--
I worked my way up to 60mg/day -- I think I was just too impatient and the Celexa finally kicked in at the same time I was taking 60mg. I have since reduced my dosage back down to 40mg (single dose in the morning), and so far I am still feeling fine. It has REALLY helped with my PMS!!! I can't believe how much it has reduced my moodiness and depression at that time! (well, at other times too :-)Just for the record, the only persistent side effect I have is dry mouth. I have increased my h2o consumption, but I believe it is still a small price to pay for feeling this good! No insomnia or sleep disturbance, no sexual side effects (though this was frustrating for the first 2 months), nothing else! Maybe I should be a poster woman for Celexa?! :-)

Just to add my two cents, I'm currently taking Celexa at 40 mgs a day
I did research before taking it and found, as Pam indicated, that
the manufacturer did studies and determined that there was no improvement
at 60 mgs over 40. You may want to talk to your doc abtou it though -- studies are
statistical constructs and never say anthing about what will happen in a
particular individual. I've had good results with it, and haven't
had any significant side effects, with the exception of compulsive
yawning for a couple of hours after I take it. Embarrasing sometimes, but
not a real problem.Good luck

Dawn:I was prescribed Celexa for depression (helping my PMS/PMDD was a welcome surprise!) Dysthymia with major depressive episodes. This 'episode' lasted for the past 6(almost 7) years. I tried other SSRIs, some TCAs, many different kinds of therapy (from cognitive-beh'r change to psychoanalysis) and nothing helped for long. I have had 4 or 5 different docs give me 4 or 5 different diagnoses, but none of it really matters to me. All I can tell you is that everything I was going to therapy for became immediately clear to me when the Celexa started to really work. I was going 3X a week, and now I am taking a break to reassess my therapy goals! I am finding that even though I am in a great mood most of the time, I still have to unlearn some of the bad habits I acquired over the past few years. My mind is on this side of 'normal' (for lack of a better word -- I hate using that term!), but I still lean towards depressive types of beh'rs because I am so used to those reactions from years of sometimes debilitating depression. At least I am ready for the journey now! And I have to say, I am grateful that the Celexa kicked in when it did -- I have two major issues happening in my life that I could never have handled if I were still depressed.
I'm sorry if this is more info than you wanted! I just get started and keep going! I hope it was helpful, in any case.

Anyhow, now that I feel like Celexa has 'kicked in' its easier to benefit from cognitive therapy ie. changing my old ways, and learning that all my experiences throughout my life so far have created filters which I see the world through. My interpretations are constantly changing and I hope getting healthier. My therapist told me this, I AM ENOUGH, I HAVE ENOUGH, I DO ENOUGH, and what others think of me is none of my business. If you'd like to talk more, e-mail me. Dezangrn@aol.com. I'm not on the computer very much but check my mail once a day. Having a 'pen-pal' would be cool.

I've been on 20 mg/day for about 4 mos., with good results (I had previously tried Prozac, with minimal to no improvement). Lately, though, I've been considering upping the dose. Do you (or anyone else here) have any advice? I feel much more on even-keel than ever, but I suspect there could be more out there for me...what do you think?

I've had terrible side effects with everything I've tried. I'm very suseptible to medication's side effects. I'm on no meds now and have been very nervous about the decision to stop taking meds. Now I find that nervousness is blowing up into total anxiety. Congrats on your Celexa success. I've suffered endlessly from depression and mood disorders. I'm considering switching from Zoloft to Celexa. Should I expect a dramatic lift in my mood? I sure hope so. Let me know what to expect from the stuff.

i am just starting celexa, without much info on the
side effects. mainly, i am concerned with sexual
dyfunction, sleepiness, and memory loss. i have
been on various other meds (prozac, zoloft,
wellbutrin, serzone, luvox). one thing that i have
noticed is an absentmindedness or memory loss when
i increased the dosage (10 to 20). i haven't noticed
any fatigue or sleepiness problems. but about the
sexual dysfunction... from reading your notes, my
sex drive might actually return?
anyone with info?

If I don't get that much sleep I'm tired the next day. I'm thinking about asking my Dr. to decrease my dosage
and see if that helps. Any one else have a similar experience?

Please let me know what experience anyone has had with switching from Zoloft to Celexa. How did you taper off one drug and could you overlap Celexa with Zoloft at lower dosages or did you have to go to a complete "washout" of the Zoloft first? Any side effects of tremors with Celexa?

> >
> > :) AlaI have been taking AD's for years - and just about everything available at one time or another. Effexor has been effective but leaves me anxious and a bit panicky. while i have been on Celexa only for a week I have noticed a marked reduction of panic and anxiety. I am still taking a half does of effexor to mitigate the withdrawel from the effexor. SSRI's with the exception of effexor caused me to have a horrible headache just at the moment of ejaculation sometimes lasting 2 or 3 days, A symtom my doctor was surprised at. effexor fixed that but the trade off was constant low grade headaches. the fact that Celexa worked quickly for me is one of those oddities and it's still far too soon to know what the ultimate effects of celexa will provide. One of Celexa's best attribute is it's no reactive nature with other drugs - Infact the only outstanding drug interaction is with MAIO's, all SSRI's have this incommon. I also take Klonopine for panic, and once again it is to soon to know if that can be dispenced with. It would be nice to get down to one drug that solves all the issue's.
I guess what bothers me is the years of trying everything and finding that nardil which made me feel great had to be with drawn, do to very low blood pressure. If Celexa turns out to be the right treatment for me, I will be delighted! However, This SSRI (Celexa) was available for more than 8 years in Europe and millions have sufferred trying to hit on the analogue of SSRI that works for us. It's fine that there are several available in the US. and have proved beneficial for many. I do take issue with the FDA for dragging it's feet on Celexa. It was carefully studied in Europe and Proven as safe and effective for many. 8 years ago this might have saved me from making some terrible mistakes that lead to many problems, from the work place to my personal life. remember that SSRI's are new here in relative terms, There was a possible solution at hand 8 years ago. Apparently a foriegn produced Drug wasn't good enough for us. Anyone who has sufferred from Deppresion knows that life is hell - If it is safe and effective, if only for some folks, Then those whom it benefits should get it. To those of you trying Celexa, I wish you success and a return to happiness.
One final note - Celexa is also Less expensive and will in a couple of years be generic - Can you say "Drug Company Greed"

I took Celexa 20 mg for 8 months In the beginning the effect was tremendous.
I was able to cope with some pretty difficult and depressing issues.
I expereienced strange dreams, sleeplessness ( I've had insomnia for years)
I felt like these side effects were minor compared to the crushing depression I had expereienced before.
I had tried Paxil and even the smallest dose turned me into a "Zombie" I
Exercise helped and I began working out vigorously on a regular basis ( 90 min 5x a week)
I slowly began to put on weight and did not connect it with the celexa
I had been told that weight loss was a side effect. I continued to gain weight and the depression slowly returned.
Now almost 25lbs later I'm calling it quits. I have recently found that many people have the same problem.
I know what took only months to gain will take me much longer to lose. Good luck to you all

I have been on Celexa for about 1 1/2 months and have had
some forgetfulness. Has anyone else experienced this?
I am considering stopping the med.

hi lisa- i have been on celexa for about two
months and had noticed, as i mentioned previously,
absentmindedness/forgetfulness when i increased
the dosage (10 to 20). i went back down to 10 for
a few more weeks and then increased up to 20. that
seemed to lessen the feeling that i had become more
forgetful. but now that i have been on celexa (20)
for about a month, i fully notice me blatantly
forgetting things. i also have started taking
ginko biloba to try to "reverse" this effect. from
what i have read about celexa, from the threads,
it takes a while to (a) kick in and start working,
and (b) some of the side effects eventually do
lessen. this is what i am banking on. i think
patience is the key with this ad. there have
been quite a few threads on "success stories"
of people that are doing well on celexa. that's
what keeps me from stopping (i think about
stopping every day. keep me informed, we seem
to be having the same side effects and it
would be good to find out if they do ever
lessen.
take care
dina

Don't know whether to stick it out for a while longer or to stop and look for another AD. Feel free to email me at gritslad@hotmail.com with advice, anecdotes etc.

I have also noticed forgetfulness and being absent-minded. This is my third week on Celexa. Today was especially hard-couldn't find keys, receipts, my bank deposit. I was getting really frustrated with myself. Otherwise I have been doing great so far. Dry mouth is an issue-drink lots of water, some weight loss and the fatigue is beginning to subside. Good luck! I think this is a good medication. I have really noticed a positive difference and am willing to accept being a little forgetful in lieu of being a lot depressed!

been on prozac > 1 year. the no orgasm thing was getting intolerable. asked MD about celexa. been on it x3 weeks, 20 mgs. well, been so busy arguing and fighting with the husband, haven't had time to have sex. so, don't know i celexa helps with that or not. feel like crying as i;m writing this. started on zoloft 3 years ago so i wouldn't break things, say terribly mean things and hurt the kids: a pms thing. had to work through that 'i don't really need meds for this, what a loser that i can't handle life without meds'. worked through that.... don't know what to do. see the md on fri. keep taking the celexa? stop? i have been exercising again. don't like being angry, snappy and bitchy (unless i want to be) and would like to have orgasms. but if anorgasmia is the price to pay so i don't feel like a angry, depressed, slovenly bitch i guess it's worth it.?.
